The fight against COVID-19 by NCDC | Nigerian federal government agency under the Federal Ministry of Health


NCDC is a body under the federal ministry of health that is responsible for the control of diseases in Nigeria.

The Nigerian centre for disease control (NCDC) is a national public health institute that is mandated to lead the preparedness, detection and response to infections disease outbreaks and public health emergencies.

The NCDC is a Nigerian federal government agency under the Federal Ministry of Health and is headquartered in Abuja, Nigeria. The agency is currently oversee by Chikwe Ihekweazu.

The first formal step to establish the NCDC took place in 2011. This is when some of the departments in the Ministry of Health, including the Epidemiological Division, the Avian Influenza Project and its laboratories.

It is also the Nigeria Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Programme (NFELTP) were moved to form the nucleus of the agency.

The Bill for an Act to establish NCDC was signed into law in November 2018, by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The “mission for the NCDC” (2017-2021) is ‘To “protect the health of Nigerians” through evidence based prevention, integrated disease surveillance and response activities, using a one health approach, guided by research and led by a skilled workforce’.

“The Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH)” is also working with “Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC)” to provide accurate and reliable updates as and when they are available, and take available measures to control spread of infectious disease outbreaks in Nigeria.

The main functions of the NCDC include the following:

  1. To prevent, detect, and control diseases of public health importance.
  2. To coordinate surveillance systems to collect, analyse and interpret data on diseases of public health importance.
  3. To support States in responding to small outbreaks, and lead the response to large disease outbreaks.
  4. To develop and maintain a network of reference and specialized laboratories.
  5. To conduct, collate, synthesize and disseminate public health research to inform policy.
  6. To lead Nigeria’s engagement with the international community on diseases of public health relevance.
The whole world is currently faced with the COVID-19 Pandemic that is spreading accross continents, which has claimed so many life's. The NCDC is putting efforts in curtailing the spread of the disease in Nigeria.
