FUASK Inaugurates Ten TETFund Tricycles to Ease Transportation Challenges for Students
A Major Boost for Student Mobility at FUASK
In a significant move to address the transportation challenges faced by its growing student population, the Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia (FUASK), has inaugurated ten tricycles provided through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). The initiative is designed to ease movement between the university and surrounding destinations, providing students with a more reliable and affordable means of transportation.
The inauguration marks another milestone for the young institution, which has rapidly expanded since opening its doors to pioneer students in September 2025. With over 1,000 pioneer students and a matriculation figure of 1,909, the need for efficient campus transport has become increasingly pressing.
The Inauguration Ceremony: What Happened
Speaking at the inauguration event, the Vice-Chancellor of FUASK, Professor Williams Barnabas Qurix, explained that the Federal Government, through TETFund, had committed to providing ten tricycles to selected institutions, with FUASK among the beneficiaries.
He noted that the vehicles would provide additional transport options for students travelling along the university’s service routes, directly addressing one of the key logistical challenges facing the institution.
The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Most Reverend Dr. Hassan Matthew Kukah, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government and TETFund for supporting the institution. He also acknowledged the contributions of the university management, staff, and other stakeholders to the institution’s development.
Why This Initiative Matters for FUASK Students
The provision of these tricycles is expected to deliver several tangible benefits to the FUASK community:
- Improved Access to Campus: The tricycles will service routes between the university and surrounding destinations, reducing the stress and time students spend commuting.
- Affordable Transportation: With transport costs rising across Nigeria following the removal of the fuel subsidy in May 2023, the tricycles offer a more affordable alternative for students.
- Enhanced Student Welfare: The initiative aligns with FUASK’s broader commitment to strong student welfare policies, as highlighted by the Vice-Chancellor during the matriculation ceremony.
- Support for a Growing Institution: As FUASK continues to expand its academic programmes and student population, reliable transportation is essential for maintaining access to education.
TETFund’s Broader National Tricycle Initiative
The tricycles handed over to FUASK are part of a larger national programme by TETFund to deploy 240 solar-powered electric tricycles across 12 public universities in Nigeria. Each beneficiary institution receives 20 tricycles and a solar charging station, with the program financed by TETFund and managed by student unions.
According to the Education Minister, Dr. Tunji Alausa, the initiative was introduced at the request of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who sought practical and sustainable transport solutions for students. The tricycles are expected to cut student transport costs by more than 70%, improve campus mobility, and promote zero-emission transport.
The deployment covers all six of Nigeria’s geopolitical zones, reflecting a truly national effort to address student transportation challenges.
About FUASK: A Rising Institution
The Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia (FUASK), was approved by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and began academic activities in September 2025. The university is designed to promote applied sciences, innovation, and practical skills, with a focus on bridging the gap between theory and practice.
FUASK currently runs 18 academic programmes across seven faculties and has integrated 30% of its curriculum with courses in business enterprise development, environmental studies, and social governance—aiming to produce self-reliant graduates who are problem-solvers and job creators.
The university’s rapid development has been supported by infrastructure projects funded by TETFund, the Kaduna State Government, and other partners.
Conclusion: A Step in the Right Direction
The inauguration of ten TETFund tricycles at FUASK is more than a logistical solution—it is a statement of intent. It demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to improving the student experience and addressing the practical barriers that can hinder academic success.
As FUASK continues to grow and mature as an institution, initiatives like this will play a critical role in ensuring that students can focus on what matters most: their education. With TETFund’s support and the university’s strong leadership, FUASK is well-positioned to become a model for student-centred infrastructure in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
